Philosophy

At Puketapu preschool we believe our tamariki need a safe environment to be able to move, explore, and grow so they can build foundations for the future.  In partnership with whanau, we will foster the child’s desire and ability to learn and become the best version of themselves.

Our qualified teachers provide quality education and care for our children.  The seven priorities of the National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP) and New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum (Te Whariki 2017) underpins our day-to-day teaching practice supporting the uniqueness of each child.  Te Whariki provides us with values and virtues that are important to us, these include:

  • Relationships
  • Enjoy Literacy and Numeracy
  • Confidence to have a go
  • Freedom of play
  • Developing independence
  • Communication
  • Being fun
  • Having fun

We value a bicultural curriculum. Our practice will include partnership, participation, and protection of all things Māori.  We respect and value our multicultural community, and the shared future this is creating.

Values

Inclusiveness: Everyone joins in.  The preschool experience is a rite of passage for all our children.  By embracing diversity, we learn from each other and about ourselves.

Fun: Let the children play, young children learn through play.  We must all allow our children time to be children they will never pass this way again.

Sense of belonging in our Rural Community: It’s our place – they are all our children, they deserve a special place in their community to be safe, secure and joyful, where whanau and Kaiako can come together to share in their early upbringing.

Education: Meaningful interactions between trained, passionate teachers and children in partnership with whanau to provide a quality service.  Early literacy and numeracy skills are developed by providing rich learning experiences through play.

Our passionate teachers work alongside the children to support and extend their learning and development through child-initiated play and mat time. We believe learning of this kind encourages curiosity, discovery and problem solving which allows individual growth and development.
